The Importance of a Three Hour Work Period in a Montessori Classroom

Here our friend N is focusing on his work, and out other friend S has something to tell him. S is giving N what we call a “quiet hand” so he can let N know he has something to say without interrupting his concentration.

Dr. Montessori observed children in several types of settings and concluded the young child needs time to grow himself. She realized a complete work cycle for the young child is a three hour time span. This allows the child to settle into the classroom environment, engage in a “work period” that involves focus, concentration and accomplishment. This is typically an hour and a half. After this time the child enters a period of “false fatigue,” when I liken to an adult mid-morning coffee break :) During this time the noise level and energy level in the classroom rises and the children tend to roam around the classroom, have a snack, or engage in socialization. After this short period of time, the children re-engage in a deeper and more intense work period. This time is vital to a Montessori classroom and an honored time. This is when more concentration and focus happens with each child, allowing for great work.

For a school to honor this “work cycle” is tricky and can be a scheduling dilemma. At MMCH we hold true the Montessori philosophy while working around what is best for the parents, and we have had the opportunity to look at the daily schedule with authentic Montessori eyes. We have slightly rearranged the schedule to accommodate the child's three hour work period as closely as we can. And I have to say, we are delighted with this opportunity to make a needed change. Our daily schedule now is;

Arrival: 8:00 - 8:30
Morning Work Period: 8:00-10:45
Gathering/Circle: 10:45-11:00
Outside Time: 11:00-11:30
Lunch: 11:30-12:00
Nap: 12:15- 2:15
Tea Time: 12:15- 1:00
Afternoon Work Period: 1:00 - 2:30
Journals: 1:00-1:30 (writing experience)
Kindergarten Meeting: 1:30ish
Gathering/Circle: 2:30-2:45
Outside: 2:45 -3:00

Having said all this, it is important as much as possible, for your child to arrive to school on time so they can take advantage of this valuable work and lesson time. As you are aware, one of the staff greets the children at the door; the other staff is in the classroom ready to guide the the children. This is an inspirational time for the teachers. The children continue to work on the development of the person they will become. We appreciate the continued support and encouragement from all of you parents. It is heart warming for us to know you are comfortable leaving your child with us everyday.
